Lee Geum-Young

Born 1973 in South Korea

Ceramic artist and art teacher, Lee had her first solo exhibition ‘White-slip Minwha’ in 2020. Minwha is the style of Korean folk art painting that were made by anonymous painters from 17th century and became part of the peoples’ arts movement of the late Joseon dynasty in Korea. Minwha is loved for the colourful portrayal of everyday subject matter and flowers. Lee, paints on a stoneware ‘canvas’ that she creates by hand, applying white-slip then scratching this surface off, revealing her Minwha. For ‘Material Dialogue’ Lee is showing a pair of flourishing peonies that spread positivity and warmth with their hand-crafted texture, a promise of comfort and in this time of isolation.
